Dr. Malie Coyne - Clinical Psychologist

About Dr. Malie Coyne

I am a Clinical Psychologist (BA MSc DPsychSc) with more than 20 years experience working in HSE Primary Care. I am also a best selling Author and an adjunct lecturer on the NUIG (National University of Ireland Galway) Doctor of Psychological Science in Clinical Psychology programme. I am an active member of the Mental Health Advisory Panel for the A Lust for Life charity.

I am very passionate about promoting wellbeing and increasing awareness of mental health issues, which I achieve through my advocacy work, talks and events and print, radio and TV contributions, as well as consultancy and duty of care for TV productions.

My first book 'Love In, Love Out - A compassionate approach to parenting your anxious child' was published on 23rd July 2020. Publisher: HarperCollins Ireland.

I write extensively for Irish newspapers and have also written pieces for RTE Brainstorm, A Lust for Life, Mental Health Ireland, Rollercoaster.ie, Laya Healthcare and many other health and well-being websites.

I played a key expert role in Caroline Foran’s bestselling book Owning it: Your b*shit-free guide to living with anxiety (2017). On the back of an impactful 'A Lust for Life' #Soundeffect campaign, I co-wrote The Little Book of Sound (2017) with Niall Breslin and Susan Quirke, where I shared the science behind being kind to yourself and others.

I have a love of radio and am a regular contributor on Newstalk FM and Kildare FM. I began my broadcasting experience as parenting expert on Clare FM in 2015. I hosted my own series of shows “Mental Health Laid Bare” on Dublin City FM in 2016, which provided a platform for guests to share their stories of mental health and tools for wellbeing. This show has now evolved into a podcast series. I also co-presented radio shows for “Walk in my Shoes” pop-up radio station during Mental Health Week 2017 & 2018.

I am a regular guest on the RTÉ Today show, where I give advice on child development, parenting and mental wellbeing.

In 2018, I appeared as psychology expert and therapist on the Firebrand Productions / Stop Watch TV documentary 'Stressed'. In 2017, I featured as psychology consultant on Vogue Williams’ documentary “My Anxious Life”. I was also the on-screen psychologist for Eating With The Enemy, and Big Year In Big School. I have also conducted various off-screen mental health screening assessments (e.g. Ultimate Hell Week; Davy's Toughest Team; Stressed; Raised by the Village).

In consultation with Infant Mental Health Specialists nationwide, I am leading the advancement of Infant Mental Health practice in Galway. I ensured its inclusion in the Galway City Early Years Health and Wellbeing Plan (2016) and we are working towards the implementation of goals to improve awareness and clinical practice.

On a personal note, I live in Galway with my husband and two little ladies.

At the Headline Ireland Mental Health Media Awards 2019...

The awards recognise excellence in the coverage of mental health issues and I was thrilled to be nominated in the Mental Health Content Online category.
However, a win at the Headline Ireland Mental Health Media Awards wasn't to be for my RTE Brainstorm piece Are We Stressing Our Children Out, but I'm so delighted for A Lust For Life who took it home for their amazing podcast. I met such lovely people and got to dress up and have a day out in the big smoke with my hubbie!

My involvement with the A Lust For Life charity...

I have written many articles for alustforlife.ie and co-written a book (The Little Book of Sound) with Bressie and Susan Quirke. I also had the honour of being chosen as their 'First Follower' at the Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Impact Awards.
At Electric Picnic 2016 I was invited by A Lust For Life to take part in a discussion panel with the Minister for Health Simon Harris on one side of me and Blind Boy Boatclub on the other at the Mental Health & Wellbeing Stage to discuss the future of mental health in Ireland. Only slightly surreal!
I spent some time on the A Lust For Life Board of Directors, and I now reside on their mental health advisory panel.

I have been presenting on this pop-up radio station for several years now and it is a project close to my heart.

Driving Infant Mental Health in Galway...

Infant mental health is a passion of mine and I ensured its inclusion in the Galway City Early Years Health and Wellbeing Plan (2016 - 2020)
Pictured below.. the Galway Parent Network designed the 'Building a Happy Baby' posters which were launched at University Hospital Galway in 2018.
I publicised the initiative by writing an article for RTE Brainstorm; How To Build a Happy Baby and chatting to Maura and Daithi on the RTE Today Show.
